Headache

Headaches can be divided into two main types:
those caused by illness, and those that occur repeatedly without serious disease.

Common recurring headaches include tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches.
Acupuncture can be effective for these conditions.

We carefully evaluate your symptoms to choose the most appropriate treatment.
Acupuncture is safe, gentle, and free from medication-related side effects.

●Tension-Type Headache

Tension-type headaches account for about 70–80% of all headaches, affect both men and women equally, and may occur from a few times a month to every day.

Causes

Stress and poor posture cause the muscles of the neck and head to tighten.
This tightness reduces blood flow, leading to stiffness and headache.
Pain then worsens circulation even more, creating a cycle that keeps headaches ongoing.

Symptoms

Tension-type headaches often begin gradually and without warning, and the pain tends to linger for a long time.

Pain is commonly felt from the head down to the neck, but in some cases it affects the entire head or spreads in a band-like pattern, as if the head is being wrapped.

The pain is usually mild to moderate and has only a limited impact on daily activities.
A feeling of pressure or heaviness is characteristic, often described as “wearing a tight headband” or “having a tight hat on the head.”

●Migraine

「片頭痛」は成人の10%弱が悩まされている頭痛で、女性に多く見られ、その数は男性の4倍ともいわれています。
多くは子どもの頃から始まり、月に1~2回程度の頻度で繰り返し起こります。

Causes

Migraine is thought to occur due to abnormal reactions between nerves and blood vessels in the head.
Changes in blood vessel size and stimulation of the trigeminal nerve can lead to inflammation and pain, causing repeated headache attacks.

Symptoms

Cluster headaches cause severe, one-sided pain around the eye and temple, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Attacks occur in clusters over weeks to months, especially in men in their 30s.

●Cluster Headache

Cluster headaches may occur only occasionally, but during an active period they cause intense daily attacks for one to two months, often at the same time each day.

Causes

The cause of cluster headache is not fully known, but it is thought to involve the brain’s biological clock and abnormal nerve–blood vessel reactions.
This mechanism is partly shared with migraine, but cluster headache has its own unique pattern.

Symptoms

Cluster headaches often occur during sleep, cause intense one-sided pain around the eye, and resolve within about an hour. Eye redness, tearing, and nasal symptoms are common, while nausea is usually absent.

●Advice

Tension-type headache

Improving blood circulation, maintaining good posture, avoiding prolonged sitting, warming the neck and shoulders, and daily light walking can help reduce tension-type headaches.

Migraine

Migraine triggers differ between individuals. Avoiding personal triggers and resting in a dark, quiet place during an attack can help reduce symptom severity.

Acupuncture for Preventing Recurrent Pain

Regular preventive acupuncture, combined with lifestyle guidance, helps reduce recurrence of shoulder stiffness and headaches and supports long-term well-being.
